Most kasavu sarees announce themselves with a wide gold border. This one is quieter: a cream cotton body ruled with hairline stripes in brown and gold, a grey striped border, and a single maroon panel on the pallu held between two lines of gold zari.
Kasavu is the Malayalam word for zari — the metallic thread woven into the border, and the reason Kerala’s cream-and-gold saree carries that name. Handloom cotton has a little body when new and softens with every wash, while the zari keeps the pleats crisp.
Keep the rest plain: a cream or maroon blouse, simple gold jewellery, jasmine in the hair — the way the saree is worn at Onam and Vishu.
